Matthew Harley Goss (OGE) won the wet bunch sprint when Omega Pharma-QuickStep leadout train lost their bearings in the last kilometer.
Race Report
2011 Milan Sanremo winner, Matthew Goss (OGE) won the sprint ahead of Manuel Belletti (ALM) and Gerald Ciolek (MTN). Race leader Mark Cavendish (OPQ) could only manage fifth place. Thanks to Ciolek, Pro Continental team from South Africa, MTN-Qhubeka secured it’s first ever podium in a World Tour race.
Goss won the sprint in the second stage after coming back in last 50 meters to pip Manuel Belletti. Mark Cavendish keeps the blue leader jersey but was very angry with his team. It was the longest stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico and it became an extremely hard day due to the weather: it rained heavily, particularly in the last hour of the race. As a result, the commisaires decided to take the time from last 3 kms to go.
The sprint was launched by Peter Sagan (CAN) with 350 meters to go. To his right Manuel Belletti tried his luck but was passed in the last 50 meters by Goss. The Omega-Quick Step team was disunited in dealing with a flyover at 1300 meters and was no longer able to get back in line for Cavendish.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 is 198 kms long form Indicatore to Narni Scalo.
