There’s another track event coming up that hasn’t been publicized as much as the recent UCI Track World Cup. The Austral Wheelrace is being held as the main event of Revolution 5 this Wednesday, December 16th here in Melbourne at Hisense Arena.
This is another cycling event that’s deeply entrenched in Australia’s history. Can you believe that this is the 112th edition of the Austral? It was first held at the MCG in 1887 and raced on penny farthings!
The field for this Austral wheelrace is touted as being one of the best in history. Shane Perkins is in top form after an amazing World Cup a couple weeks ago and he’ll be defending his Austral title from last year. This time he’ll be riding off scratch in the 2000m handicapped race. I don’t know what the handicapper was thinking last year putting Perko off 15m! Jack Bobridge certainly wasn’t happy about that.
Also, don’t forget to sign up for the Musashi competition to have the chance to win a skills clinic with Anna Meres and Shane Perkins. We asked Shane for some sprinting tips hoping for a good write-up, but all he would divulge was “to go fast you must train fast”. I guess the only people who will find out how that’s done are the people who win the skills clinic! The competition closes tomorrow (Friday) at 11am AEST so click here to enter.
