That’s a great list - thanks. Perhaps another that could go well is Mindfulness - focussing attention on the present moment. I personally find this is one of the greatest joys of riding, and perhaps not too dissimilar from what was described as Savouring.

When I was a kid, I used to ride my bike everywhere. To friends places after school, to school if I missed the bus, just generally cruising around the neighbourhood if I had nothing better to do and so on.

I hadn’t hopped on a bike for many years after high school. Rediscovering the feeling of freedom when I jumped on a road bike as an adult just made me happy. I wasn’t very quick in the beginning and I suffered greatly whilst trying to keep up with my mates, but for some reason I still really enjoyed it.

Personally I think it definitely brings you back to your youth (if you were like me, riding around as a kid) and feeling young and free is bound to make you smile.

It’s alluded to in one or two of your categories, but just being outdoors, breathing fresh air and absorbing some Vitamin D, especially if you’re in a non-urban environment, is a big part of it, I think.

What about the possibility of improvement. Theres always room to improve and learn a new skill in cycling. I get a great sense of joy from that.

You didn’t mention the endorphin high we get from a hard ride Justin. And we now know that those naturally generated endorphins link to the same brain receptors as cocaine.
