One thing you can be certain of Loren; you won’t be “battling it out in Belgium” for SIX hours and your ‘Angel’ should be telling you that the ability to sprint across the gaps when the echelons form makes the difference between staying on the right wheels or being left with the also-rans.

If your coach says you need six hours of ‘junk’ miles to prepare for the classics, my advice is “sack him.” When push comes to shove you shouldn’t be pushing hard on the pedals, you should raise your cadence well over 100rpm. (preferably 130 for that do-or-die mid-race sprint.)

Change your training route according to the weather. Do the outward leg for a maximum of an hour into the wind - don’t let your cadence drop below 80rpm on the climbs - put in a couple of flat-out efforts and then enjoy the pure speed/fun on the wind-assisted return trip. Training intensity - cardio-vascular and anaerobic metabolism - is what you need to get into shape for racing. Quality, not quantity. Then your ‘devil’ won’t get a word in edgeways.

Dave2020: that well known sports scientist and cycling tactician. Coz apparently riders on the best team in the world need advice from randoms on the internet.

Don’t concern yourself about the source of the advice - just give it some thought. Can YOU offer us all ONE good reason WHY a six-hour “epic” training bash is the ideal preparation for three hours on the bike, when perhaps ten minutes of flat out speed makes the difference between being in with a chance or being nowhere. e.g. Stage 2 of the Ladies Tour of Qatar . . . .

For the love of cycling (the best you can be), Dave Smart.

For those guys out there who are blessed with a natural curiosity, don’t take ‘my word’ for it; work it out for yourself:-

Coaching jargon for that advice is reverse-periodization. I used the same approach 50 years ago, but the expression I used was ‘common sense’. (making the best use of the limited time available). I thought plain English would be more accessible, but AnotherExpert clearly doesn’t get it? You don’t happen to coach Loren by any chance, do you?

“If you have been training on and off for the last year then you have the base, spending the first 3 months of this year doing base level training isn’t really going to improve your fitness is it?”

Let’s see how “the best team in the world” fares against the other best teams in the world in the Spring Classics. They weren’t quite on the pace in Qatar.

They’re some fast guests. I suppose that’s why you only found out you encountered them “later”. Great photo/selfie.
