Behind the scenes of Jack Bobridge’s Tour Down Under stage win

Subaru Australia spent Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under with the UniSA team director Dave Sanders and team cyclist Jack Bobridge. Dave took us where few rarely go, and showed us a behind-the-scenes look inside the Subaru team car and how it assists riders throughout the course. Jack went on to win the leaders jersey, the sprinters jersey and the Subaru King of the Mountain jersey.

All I could find on channel 9’s catchup TV was 45 seconds of footage as I didn’t want to stay up till 11.30pm after two episodes of Two Broke Girls to watch the highlights. (disgraceful)

Is it just me who finds the Uni SA Team jerseys easily confused with the national road jersey? It is almost like they are stealing the honour of the real national road champion. Especially when you look at the champions team jerseys over the years.

    Perhaps offtopic for Cyclingtips but it does seem a little bit of a strange sponsorship for a university.
    
    Whatever else sponsoring a cycling team is good for, it’s not the most obvious way to reach the target demographic (primarily, school leavers) and at a time when universities are crying poor an ineffective sponsorship of professional sport is likely to grate with staff.

      It’s not targeted directly at school leavers (if you’re targeting school leavers you’re too late, and an uncool sport like cycling will not be effective) but at the middle-aged cycling fans who are the parents of high school students. They also work on building brand recognition with young kids who see the race (it’s during the school holidays) and take home free stuff handed out from the university’s car in the Tour Parade.
      
      It’s quite a cheap promotion and much more effective than pissing away money on conventional TV advertising, so I can’t imagine there being any issues with staff relations so long as the management can explain their strategy. There are also a number of perks for the staff (who are more likely than most to be middle-aged cycling fans) such as discounted entry to the Challenge Tour.

the fact that they can pump this out as quickly as they did and as good as it is shows up a lot of the network coverage… all the while plugging the car subtly (probably the hardest thing to do) whilst not distracting from the reason anyone would want to watch it. top marks!

  +1 Note that Sanders did not swear either when Bobridge crossed the line unlike many other in car vids. He deserves an OAM. Loved the taciturn “beard in the back” too.

Very uplifting video this - great effort from these blokes. Big ups, too, for Neil Van Der Ploeg who did a power of work on the front today in support of the Ochre Jersey.

Great video, and to be honest I hadn’t seen a picture of the oft mentioned Dave Saunders, so good to put a face to the legendary name.
