Discussion thread #1: Master’s racing - how are you coping with the increased level of competition? What’s you suggestions for better grading?

  The specialist timetrial guys who train like pro time trial specialists ruin it for your average fattie master like me. Not being able to keep up is very disheartening. They should ban specialist timetrial guys who train like pro time trial specialists and give the skinny climbers a mars bar weight belt so the don’t have an unfair weight advantage in the mountains over other fattie masters like me.

  Seriously, masters racing is fun except for the odd whinger your site seems to attract. Lucky for me, they’re the minority and aren’t completely ruining the second best cycling site on the net.

  Works… if the level of comp is going up. HTF or drop down a grade and get over it. What’s the problem? Granted I do see merrit in Scott’s comments that most of the masters guys should actually be racing lower grade Elite but how can you force that? As to raising the age, no matter what age there will always be those that can give more time and money to their sport and perform better for it.

  The simpler the better. Junior (U20), Veteran (40+) and Open. Any discussion about training hours, children, weight is tedious.

  It’s quite funny this discussion and also VERY VERY naive. Here’s a perfectly honnest solution, make the podium pee and I mean every podium pee in the test tube. Then follow aver y simple solution, start a master one age group older than his class. Move him in his class if he is in the peloton, then if he makes a podium, move him into a class one younger than him (if he wishes).
  
  Also, that unique local flavor of master is not unique at all. Take the great example of socal crit racing. For years and years and years it was world class, until this dumb idiot offered what we knew all along but just accepted as world class:

  When you think about it, single master guy who never trained like monster, credit card technician who drove a rent a Porsche and bike shop nutter who constantly harassed staff for at cost items. That sounds familiar.

  When you look at cycling, swimming etc, masters has appeared to be set at the age when most pro’s have given it up. Swimming has a ridiculously young age for theres. Obviously with guys like Jens and Horner riding well, well into there 40’s, there is validity in moving the age bracket when Masters/Vets start…

    ‘Masters’ in most sports was originally introduced at an age where former pros who have since retired can still compete, while it being recognised that they would no longer be competitive in elite competition.

    Mate any time he goes into the last corner in front, there is usually a time gap to second place by the finish line haha he was a master at that in his day.

  his lines look good in theory but in practise there’s usually 20 riders in the way, meaning you’re doing 5 km/h by the time you reach the corner. the solution is to duck up the inside and use your hip and shoulder on the apex.

        i would guess 30 km/h is good, most of the time you’re backed up behind traffic though and going slower

      Surely they do look at their computer’s files later (unless they are bad losers and the bike+computer ended up in the Yarra).

        any measure of speed is an average, which gains in accuracy as sampling frequency increases. GPS speed isn’t very accurate over short distances, such as around a crit course corner where your speed is varying a lot in a short distance/time. you can see a reading on strava but i wouldn’t trust it.

        i’m going mainly on strava speed traces - they seem to be averaged out. you don’t get enough resolution to track precise speed through a short corner. you may be right that GPS technology is capable of it, but i think there is still potential for minor positioning error too.

        Ah got you, that is software based in, motorsport we use 10 or 20 and you can drill down to that resolution between any two segments. With positioning you park something still for a couple of hours and it will “walk” around, (and you can trace it) but no more than about 5mt total, and over the time frame it is insignificant

        i’ve used a microsat in motor vehicle testing, not motorsport (it magnetically sticks to the door panel), it was highly accurate but at higher speeds 5m location error is of less significance than in cycling, and also what that system does is use microwaves aimed at the road surface to corroborate (and correct i assume) the GPS signal.

        GPS accuracy is best when there’s more satellites in view (ie. no buildings, trees, mountains in the way), the climatic conditions are stable (ie. a sunny day) and you’ve left the GPS switched on for at least half an hour so that it’s received a full set of data from the satellites (some data is only sent periodically, and this data is used by the GPS unit to get better accuracy). And of course some GPS units are better at accuracy due to a combination of GPS chipset (hardware) and software (factory programmed into the GPS unit) designed to reduce the error. This is why many consumer GPS units will not perform like, say, a GPS designed for military or motorsport. Personally, I’d trust my wheel speed sensor over the GPS on my bike, even though it’s only measuring once per rotation it’s still pretty accurate. GPS is good for giving you a map of approximately where the speed occurred.

    you know, i’ve never bothered to look at my file for speed, the power spikes right after are way more fun to oggle.
    
    anyway, a quick random sample (15 data points) of corner speeds this week in a-grade gives an average of 26.6km/h a min of 18.1km/h and a max of 30.5km/h.
    
    This is all lowest speed for the corner, which I’d assume is at the exit, not the tip in speed. Finally I should note that I spent time sitting further down the bunch where you have to brake a lot more due to the concertina, and as a fat boy I slow a bit more than others through the corner due to it’s uphill nature.

  Yes. In addition to lowering your centre of gravity, bring your centre of gravity to the inside of the turn rather than leaving it over the centre of the bike. Basically, lean into it! The tighter the corner, the more important this is and the faster the bike with corner. A nice side effect of this is you end up keeping the bike more vertical meaning less chance of loosing tracion. Understanding the mechanics of steering helps too. The leaning means you will be counter steering whether you know it or not. IE push the left bar, to turn left. Push the right bar to turn right.

    Actually if you ask a pro, they’ll tell you differently. Lean the bike, not the body, as it’s not a motorbike, you don’t have the ability to create centrifugal forces with the throttle to force the bike to stand up, on a bicycle, you lean too much, you crash.

      Ok, first the throttle is not what brings a motorcycle out of a corner, steering input or movement of the COG does. You can wind the throttle on mid corner all you like and all that will happen is the front wheel comes of the ground and the bike continues to go around the corner. I’ve done it plenty.
      Second, OF COURSE if you lean too much you crash! I’m not suggesting you get off the side of the bike and try and drag your knee and elbow along the ground. I am saying move your inside knee, and your head out from the centre of the bike a little.
      Secondly, the laws of physiscs doesnt care if the bike has a motor or not, in both cases countersteeing is employed (whether you know it or not) meaning the center of gravity must move toward the inside. For that to happen, either the rider or the bike or both must lean to the inside. Personally I choose to keep the bike more upright and move my COG to aid in keeping grip levels/tyre contact patch at maximum.
      Finally, I’ve seen plenty of down right silly/ugly/wrong technique displayed by pros over the year that may or maynot get them results. Doesn’t make it the best way to do it? Certainly not. By your logic, I need to climb with my knees and elbows out ala Froomes “spider humping a lightbulb” technique?

        Yep, agree with that. Allow me to clarify; at no point am I suggesting the bike remian completely vertical. I am however suggesting the rider should be leaning more than the bike is.

Hence, I agree that on a bicycle, steering torque is the primary steering input. At no time did I suggest that leaning into a corner is the primary input to turn a bicycle.

        Not sure what you mean ‘by your logic’, I too have ridden motorbikes, one of which was a ducati 700ss and I have also owned a Vespa PX200 and both do exactly the same thing in a corner. When you ‘twist the throttle’ due to centrifugal forces, the wheel will want to straighten up, counter steering forces the wheel to lean, but applying torque in a bend will still have the effect of the wheel wanting to ‘stand up’ whether or not it also wants to leave the ground! My point is, a bicycle does not have that torque available in a corner, if you lean too far (with either body or bike) and your centre of gravity moves too far over, you do not have available enough torque to avoid crashing.
        This is 101 at most VIC Roads motorcycling courses.

        the major cause of crashing is demanding the transmission of higher force by your tyre than the grip will accommodate. the average force is a function of cornering speed (or more accurately - centripetal acceleration). but you will get spikes in that force due to bumps in the road and handling technique. it’s the latter - with the objective of smoothing out the spikes in force - which you guys are debating.
        
        moving your COG doesn’t steer the bike, it just balances the lateral force applied on the bike by the road acting against the tyre, i.e. stopping the bike toppling over to the outside. as you turn harder, that force increases and you will need to shift your COG more. but changes in COG follow changes in turning force/centripetal acceleration - they don’t drive it.

      Look, I’m happy to be proven wrong, but everything I have just read or watched in the last hour have said the same thing: “weight the outside pedal”. Seems to me that by pushing down on the pedal, the effect will be to stand the bike up under you. The net result of that will be to have you leaning more than the bike no?

  Drapac did have an emphasis on whole-of-life stuff for their riders: education, communication training, etc.
  Is that still the case? How does it work?

    Yes Chris they did. I was the manager of Drapac in 2007 the year Lapthorne won the Nationals, and the first time they went Pro Conti. It was difficult to run a ‘Pro’ team with an holistic approach to sport. Meaning almost all of the riders were studying. We went to Europe and got hammered.
    
    This time though all of the riders are full time so it will be easier for them to commit to the Pro level.
    
    The holistic message has disappeared from the vocabulary over the past couple of seasons. It has merit, but very difficult to put into practise at the level they will race next year.

Discussion thread #5: How do you deal with the heat during racing and training? Anything to add?

  for me the heat usually comes when i finally arrive home. the only solution i’ve found is mental toughness.

  I found that segment very interesting. Since I train and race in tropical NthQLD, it’s bloody hot and bloody humit pretty much all year around. Training in summer can be challenge to keep the fluids up. That’s one thing I would add is it’s important to keep up with both water and electrolite losses. When it’s hot, and you’re in a race, there is nothing that you can do other than keep racing.
  
  How long does the heat training effect last? Days, weeks or months? I suppose there is no advantage for me since everyone is training in the heat!

  Well I’m from Queensland and I don’t do much racing in the colder months because I hate the cold. As long as you keep your fluids up in summer its the better time to ride. Hot and windy training in the early afternoon makes racing seen like a recovery ride.

  2 weeks in Perth during the summer, with temps in excess of 40c, that’ll get all the heat you need, plus the wind adds a blowing furnace effect. On days like that, frozen bidons thaw out in less than 30 mins, and all you need thereafter is a teabag for your bidon as the water is that hot!

  Heat is my friend. Somewhere I have a photo showing a Garmin displaying temperature at the completion of the afternoon category races of the 2012 Australian MTB Championships - 54 degrees.
  
  In the first two Enduros of the 2008 season, the temperature sat at over 40 degrees for the entirety of the 6hr races (Eildon and Mt Beauty) - neither caused me issues, but other riders did drop like flies. I’ve always preferred the heat.

      i have a time that is only a couple of secs of Scott’s - nowhere near the KOM - but i know that i did this sucking wheel and with a flying start. 1:18 off a standing start and alone is rocketing. no coincidence he has a gold medal.

    Chris Hoy is coming over for the TDU. A side trip to Melbourne or a head-to-head against Scott on the Adelaide Parklands HPV/crit circuit (uses the pit straight of the F1/V8 circuit) could be in order!

    Lately velocite I’ve been getting out twice a week, seriously! And it’s killing me…
    In the month before I did the my time I really hadn’t done much either, 2 to 3 rides a week. But I can’t deny, before that I was doing heaps with the Bendigo bunch, Lapthorne, Hucker, Haig, Crome, McCarthy, Witmitz, O’Brien etc.

    I can guarantee you Robbie McEwen is way, WAAAAY from being anything near like a retired rider, fitness wise. His pride is almost as prodigious as his talent. There are some fit racing guys on the Gold Coast and Robbie makes a point of showing ‘em who’s boss - even at Club races. His BOOM moment is still way out of this world.

  juniors. forget masters - how do we get juniors into the sport? most parents won’t let them ride on the road, and when they turn up at a clubbie, they’re often faced with a bunch of hardened, very adult and these days quite fit riders in the lowest grade. i’ve seen kids get upset at being smashed, of course not appreciating how brave they are lining up in those circumstances.

      BMX is the way to go - it worked for Robbie McEwen and has been responsible for the majority of recent rainbow jerseys won by Aussies.

      Limiting their gears in club racing is ridiculous - and often dangerous to others in the bunch as they weave around trying to spin away at 17,000rpm.
      
      But yes, please, send them over to us in MTB. Australia needs its own version of Anton Cooper in XC (2012 Under 19 World Champ from New Zealand… we just claim him as one of us ;).

        Generally, the most dangeroud person in a bunch is the triathelete or MTBr with no bunch experience who freaks out when a junior rider comes within a metre of ‘his’ line. In the lower grades, most juniors have more experience than the adults they are racing, and better skills - even at 120-160 rpm.

    Huh? Why are kids (juniors) racing against adults? At my club the junior race… only against their own age group!

      firstly, need to define juniors. once you’re 17, you’re usually near a stage where you’re not afraid of riding against adults. but i meant more younger kids, anything from 10? to 16 say. for them, it comes down to numbers. i imagine all clubs would be happy to run a juniors grade in principle, but it’s impracticable when only 2 turn up.

      Kids - if they can handle a bike and have some talent - should be riding against those just above their own level..be that other juniors or adults. On the road, my son started riding e-Grade men as a first year u13, handled himself well and finished mid pack. Our juniors need to be thrown into tough situations so they can develop…racing two u15s against each other doesn’t help anyone, except perhaps the pride of the e-grade men who would otherwise be beaten by a twelve year old! Oh - and a decent u-13/15 can average 120 to 130 cadence for a shorter crit with a bit of effort. Some of our juniors are way better than we think!

  Interview Malachi about his cycling story and the bikes he’s had. I’ve never met anyone who rides stuff that is so beautifully turned out. Absolute concourse condition always. The baby blue Casati he had some years back stands out as pristine.

  Try and get an interview (and Hot Lap?) with the new Orica-AIS signing Valentina Scandolara at some point. According to the team website she is spending the whole summer training in Australia and it would be nice for us to get to know a few new faces.
