Welcome to episode 10 of season 2 of The Bike Lane. With the Giro d'Italia in its final week we discuss how we see it unfolding, and also talk to Matty Lloyd to see why he's not there. We also talk to Nicki Vance about her report on Orica-GreenEDGE, we look at the Tour of California, talk to a VIS nutritionist about the benefits of sugars in a cyclist's diet, and do a Hot Lap with former AFL great Danny Frawley. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed making it.

Yet another great show boys, it gets better every week. SBS hope you are watching, this would make a good sister show to Cycling Central!!

Looking forward to the smack down Hot Lap next week. Wade Vs Scott, any chance of leaking the day, time, prior? Some crowd encouragement might help see the record fall. I would have picked Wade to win after his recent form from the MTB stage race, but Scott’s ergo sessions sound like it might even things up.

  it is a great show, however I am enjoying watching it online. It is convenient to watch at whatever time suits and if you are travelling, like I was last week, you can watch it from anywhere in the world and get some nice Aussie accents (and Wades) and some good cycling news right there on your iPad. Discussion thread #1: Can Cadel Evans beat Vincenzo Nibali in the Giro d’Italia?

  I agree with Wade, I can’t see Cadel beating Vincenzo, but the race is Vincenzo’s to lose. Tonight’s ITT will be all important, but the those two huge Mt stages (if they happen) are not to be sneezed at, and anyone can have a big or a bad day. So yeh, Vincenzo’s to lose.

    Agree, Cadel won’t win unless Nibali makes a mistake. Cadel doesn’t have the firepower to put Nibali to the sword up the big mountains (if they happen). I hope that I am wrong though.
    Maybe Nibbles will get a bad tyre change like Cadel got a few year back. Or a flat in the ITT. Who knows.

      Considering Nibali is an Italian in the Giro d’Italia I reckon its highly unlikely he will get a bad wheel change like Cadel did in the Vuelta.

        Agreed. There’s more chance the American’s will find a sneaky way to take back the 1983 America’s Cup than an Italian getting poor service in the final days of the Giro while leading the Giro.

  Great question. But let’s not forget that Cadel came into this GT to sharpen his racing form, not to win it. If he dug deep, he might have got closer, but then his TDF chances could be compromised.
  This clearly shows that he’s in the right place for a good TDF (barring sickness and crashes).
  Taking home the Red Jersey would be a good prize for his consistent efforts. Cav is only a few points ahead, and I doubt Cav will be there, up the top of Stelvio.

  I get the feeling Evans has had a talking to by BMC before the Giro. They probably said to him: ‘if you want to lead in the Tour De France you’ll have to prove you’ve still got it otherwise, we have one or two talented youngsters that are more than capable’.
  With little preparation under his belt, Evans will be particularly happy that he gave it his all and has performed consistently. A win would be great but not in the forefront of his mind (especially after last stage!). Let Nibali win the battle, Evans will be looking to the Tour De France!

Discussion thread #2: What effect (if any) will the withdrawal of Wiggins and Hesjedal from Giro have on the race for the GC at the Tour de France?

  Like Henk V keeps saying having Tejay and Cadel at TdF for BMC will be a good thing. Options, options, options, so logically it must be the same for Sky? But is Sky big enough for those two egos? And if they do ego detonate, who will side with who? Rigoberto has said a couple of things this Giro that indicate the team is more behind Brad than Chris, but there are probably factions. I am pretty sure Michelle and Chris live in Monaco, so does that create a ‘Monaco Bloc’ in Sky that would rally around Chris? But 3 weeks is a long time, so probability is high only one of them will be standing for the last stage anyway.
  
  Also, will Wiggins have fully recovered for TdF? How bad is his knee? How big a system pull-down was there from his virus. Cadel has just taken a year to really get over his, and look at how long Dodger has taken to be back on really top form. And is his head on right after the crash and hospitalisation from last year. So Wiggo being back on song for TdF 2013 is not a done deal.

  They’ve broke the seal when it comes to pulling out of a big Tour, everyone else will be quietly watching. The decision to pull out is always easier the 2nd time around.

    This was actually the third Grand Tour DNF for Sir Brat, and the fifth for Hesjedal. That’s even more big withdrawls than Andy Schleck!

  OK, so AG2R and the MPCC and UCI. AG2R are self banning themselves from 8 days of racing as per MPCC agreement and missing the Dauphine. Now should AG2R miss Tour De Suisse as well as Dauphine, or is that overkill? There has been discussion about UCI fining AG2R if they do miss Dauphine. What authority does MPCC have to self ban themselves? Missing the Dauphine is a huge thing for AG2R as this is their home race. This is a complex and interwoven issue. Not the least of which is the changes in the power structure in cycling that MPCC could have vis a vis UCI. What do you three think of this?

    I say respect for AG2R for holding up their end of the bargain as far as MPCC goes. It’s examples like this that give me confidence that one day cycling will be considered a clean sport.

    Good question…but I think CA have got a reasonable case to say that at least for road and track they’ve got their act together.
    
    On the road, at the very lowest level they’ve got the Breeze rides program. The Women’s NRS has better TV coverage than the UCI World Cup races, except the Tour of Qatar. And the quasi-national pro squad runs a women’s team as well as a men’s team.
    
    The one big gap as far as the road program goes is the lack of a UCI race in Australia. It would be great if a proper women’s TDU could be run with some proper TV coverage, but as we all know CA is not in a position to tell the TDU what to do.

  Like a dog with a bone….. Just watched Cadel’s untimely mechanical on the final ascent of stage 20 last night that saw him lose 2nd place to Uran. Not sure exactly what the nature of the problem was but it seemed like gears. Are electronic groups reliable enough yet? Also, we never hear the autopsy that must surely take place after such costly failures. Sponsor PR control no doubt. Just to clarify, I’m not anti electronic at all, just vey interested in the risk/benefit equation.

    It might be stretching the definition a bit since he is at the top of the points classification, but I would agree with Jules that Cavendish might be worth considering. He’s won a bag of stages already and could go home happy, he hates the hilly stuff and he’d probably rather focus on the Tour de France (better publicity in the UK) instead of risking a crash on a Giro descent. On top of all that the weather sucks, and yet he’s still flogging himself to get up the mountains of the Giro within the time cut. He used to be a total wanker and would quit the Tour for the next flat race he could handle, these days he’s hardened up and is showing some serious respect for the traditions of the sport.

  OK so it is Sunday arvo, and the weekend is almost over. Time to put in my weekend warrior nomination, and it is Cadel. For being so consistently consistent, (nod to Arsene) and not giving up. For being gracious after losing so much time in the ITT and keeping his cool and professionalism after losing 3rd due to a mechanical on stage 20. For graciously conceding that Vincenzo deserved this win and for just being our Cadel.

  Danny was impressive, that was a great lap for a big unit like him.
  
  Wade will leave Scotty going up the hill, but then Scotty will drop like a brick back past Wade down the Western hill. Scotty leading into and through the good line of the bottom hairpin, but will Wade take him back on the final up hill sprint? Muscle vs Climber, should be a great lap. Like I said above Moto1 required, and as runrider and I both say above - Tifosi required, so get the word out for date and Time.

  While not exactly comparing apples, the only form guide I can find is Scott’s recently timed ascent of arthur’s seat for the bay2bay ride in a time of 12:08. Wade has scored a strava PB of 10:48 but this was well and truly before ‘the big 4-0′. A close call that could come down to who’s willing to wear the most aero helmet.

  I have too much sugar in my diet, because I really feel it when I try to go without.
  Cycling (like running) seems to dump any effects from my bad eating habits I have out on the road, so I never felt I needed to say no to things I really should.

  Yes Most definitely. Sugar consumption is out of control in most people’s diets. It’s the fructose component of sugar that is particularly harmful. If you want to reload Glycogen in muscles eat healthy carbs such as sweet potato, they are nutrient dense and convert to glucose quickly.   Good idea, someone who helps them with their ‘welfare’ is going to be useful considering you have young men (natural risk takers at that age) in often strange environments away from family support, etc.
  
  I see her report as an in-house whitewash, but that’s me with my harsh meter up to 11. I think Stevo has been a massive elephant (horse) in the room for years, and is way beyond some poor kid who doped because everyone else did. He has had plenty of opportunity to admit to it (ala Hodge & White) but didn’t. He also spent years as a DS where the opportunity to walk away was much easier. He didn’t. That ‘result’ is a joke in my eyes.
  
  Gerry Ryan has put his money where his mouth is, especially with junior and women’s cycling here in Australia. But…there are plenty of examples of other wealthy team owners running teams with very questionable attitudes when it comes to doping. Ryan has a hell of a lot to lose if his team dopes here, so you’d have to think he’s comfortable they don’t/won’t.
  
  One aspect of the Essendon drug scandal is that they bypassed the doctor, using the biochemist with an internet degree. The belief I have is that a doctor has sworn an oath to look after the patient for their ‘whole of life’, hence why many times doc’s won’t prescribe drugs for a serious illness because side effects, etc. Teams need to use this to their advantage, find a reliable doctor, not a trumped up lab rat…

Every week I continue to be so impressed with how slick and professional this show is. Incredible for a vidcast.

And for next week Moto 1 is definitely required for McGrory V Wallace Hot Lap. Give a day and time and you can get some Tifosi out as well! No Mankini’s allowed though.

the weather was a big factor in the giro, cadel had some real unfortunate incidents but thats racing.
now bmc have stuff to work out who will lead the TDF will they go with a young rider who won the ATOC or go with the aged rider who won the TDF and has podium in the GIRO.
team SKY also have their worries too with FROOME,SIR WIGGINS and URAN, david u have ur cards to play.
