Taipei Cycle D&I Award Winner: The Dream Machine

It’s not certain what Johnny Mole’s background with cycling is, but if you look at his website you’ll notice that he’s done some work for SMS Santini with the GreenEDGE kit concept design, he created the 2011 Maglia Rosa for the Giro d’Italia, designed the Katusha kit, as well as many other designed based cycling projects.

The Dream Machine design is unmistakable original and would not be UCI legal (which is beside the point). Jonny Mole said, “If you look at the side profile, you recognise it immediately. The geometric design that characterizes the structure called the front Driving Unit , a compact design that includes a uniquely shaped fork, handlebar and stem. Basically, the front part of the bicycle appears as a single block in continuation of the chassis. But all the parts are exactly where they belong. Geometrically you are riding in the classical position. In Driving Unit has been set up housing for an electronic device (bike computers, navigation …).”

The make-up of the Dream Machine was parts from Vision , FSA , Selle Italy and Victoria . For some reason SRAM weren’t named in the credits, even though you can see the SRAM Red levers. We don’t know who is behind the disc brakes.

  Well, its much better than the same fat bloke driving his (mercedes/bmw/porsche/falcon/truck) and blowing his angry horn at the rest of us on Beach Road! When I see those with limited ability yet riding expensive gear I do keep reminding myself that they are members of OUR club and deserve encouragement.

i’ve reconsidered my position on this bike. it would be a race weapon, as everyone else’s VO2max would be reduced dramatically on account of p/ing themselves laughing

I may think the UCI legal version is a little prettier-read as LOOK 675… but, that is a preference for French things mainly. However it isn’t that radical a departure from current trends in integration (my current least favorite buzzword of the cycling industry). I want bike mechanics to design more things. This just looks like a b/ to work on.

I’m really not clear on the point of this particular bike - other than being different for the sake of being different. That floats some people’s boat, but not mine.

If you want to go fast under your own steam and don’t care about UCI rules, you can buy a recumbent lowracer, which will completely blow away any road or triathlon bike on the market on flat ground.

We’ve known for ages that it’s possible to build more aerodynamic bicycles, even assuming a conventional road bike position, if you ditch the double diamond restrictions. Zipp did it back in the 1990s. “Beam bikes” also ride very well, though they’d probably be flexy as hell in a sprint - triathletes don’t care, but us roadies will :)

But until the UCI ditches the double diamond rules there’s no point getting too excited about them.

Intresting take on the drop bars! Makes for new hand positions on those extensions.

Like the integrated brake calipers, but the sloping top tube reminds me too much of my, dare I say it, 29er.

Designing a TT bike for an attempt at the absolute hour record may be an interesting next step for these or like minded designers. Am interested also why they thought drop ins should be part of this bike’s design.
