Out of 55 starters only 15 finished the infamous Geelong “Ritchie Boulevard” hotdog circuit. It’s an excellent venue for spectators but a dreaded course for the riders. Only 600m around and about 80 standing starts, gaps begin to open up quickly. If you’re not top 20 in the pecking order, you’re almost guaranteed not to finish.
I spoke with Greg Henderson after the race and he showed me his SRM data: 406w average and 1400w in the sprint to take the win. He said, “That’s way too much for January 1st!”. Yes, it might be a show-race, but these guys aren’t soft pedalling it. That’s massive!
