Bad karma. She used to be one of my favorites, so dominant. But the Abbot sandwich turned it all around.

    • winkybiker

      What are you talking about?

      • lefthandside

Vos is smiling in the photos, but a great white shark has a great smile too. She’s got to be pretty ruthless to be as good as she is. Without googling the video, I recall a reasonably recent incident where Vos or at least a couple of her team mates boxed in another rider in a pretty obvious and unsporting fashion to prevent her from being able to chase and disrupt their team podium. It was caught on camera and looked pretty horrendous and like something you’d see in a schoolyard rather than a bike race. Actually I will google it for you http://prowomenscycling.com/2014/07/14/video-stage-9-giro-rosa-2014/

        • winkybiker

Yeah, OK, I remember that. Perhaps a symptom of the lack of depth in women’s pro cycling that 1 team can be so dominant.

          • lefthandside

Possibly - it was certainly crude but at any rate demonstrates the mentality of elite competitors, including Vos. They are not out there to make friends - they are out there to win. I wonder how folks would have reacted to Ian Stannard vs Etixx-Quikstep if they had tried to do the same to him at het nieuwsblad. They were criticised for NOT using their numbers intelligently. Will be interesting to see the next few years in the Women’s pro tour. I hope the number of really strong teams keeps increasing

            • jules

i reckon Stannard would have thrown a right hook at them

            • winkybiker

Yes, It always surprises me when people are surprised that pro athletes aren’t better “role models”. They are indeed out there to win. That’s their job. It doesn’t give them qualifications or particular experience in being better people.

              • lefthandside

indeed. Or in the same vein, just because they are aggressive on the road doesn’t mean they can’t be inspiring role models and awesome people

            • Thomas

No shortage of really strong teams this year. Rabo-Liv, Wiggle-Honda, Boels Dolmans, Bigla and to a lesser extent Liv-Plantur, Orica-AIS, Velocio-SRAM and Hitec Products are certainly keeping things interesting.

Why do you take this so personally Alex? Yeah, amateur tactics, but move one. You can’t judge someone’s entire character but something like this.

          • AlexXSmith

Since when can a person not judge their appreciation of others based on what one considers cheap and even dangerous tactics?

And I’m not taking it personally, I’m not sure you understand the definition of that phrase.

I live in a free country and simply my opinion of her soured. Which was a shame, since she is/was a great rider otherwise.

Fair enough, you’re definitely welcome to share your opinion here. I’d just caution against holding any athlete to such high moral ground.

In the big scheme of things, I thought it was called racing.

I felt exactly the same as you did after that incident. I felt that it was amateurish and cheap.

Meh. They blocked, it wasn’t the prettiest thing, but far worse things happen in sprints or in the spring classics. If you judge riders by one action, then you should have a strong dislike for riders like Cavendish or Stybar as well.

    • Dave

      Indeed.

It wasn’t just the long string of first places that had a Schumacher-Ferrari feel about that long period of domination.

    • Bobby Ray

Wow! This so-called “tactic” happened nearly a year ago, and some people are still getting their panties in a wad over this?

    We Own Yellow?
Seems a very odd name choice for a cycling initiative given the 100yr+ association between yellow and the Tour. Are ASO involved? There’s no mention of them on the group’s web page. I would have thought that if you were planning on growing something in cycling, you wouldn’t claim ownership of the most famous colour in cycling.

    • dbranson

It appears to be in association with the Tour. On the We Own Yellow main page it states, “together with Le Tour Utrecht”. Also the Utrecht 2015 Grand Depart logo is on that page, which links to tourdefranceutrecht.com and includes the Tour logo.

Its great to see a champion returning to the race scene after recovering from an injury.
    Best of luck Marianne.
