I was watching an interview with Meares over the weekend and it was really good to listen to her talk about fears and goals along with her achievements and how she has developed focused. I’m no Anna Meares but I have goals as well, it’s good to hear that my thoughts are not dissimilar to champions. Thanks for the quote about strength, aggression and muscle; it is so important for women in sport to know that they need not be defined by their size regardless of whether they be big or small.

A pleasure Rowena. It is not surprising so many people feel they can relate to Anna Meares given her openness and her willingness to put time in at the grass roots level.

Meares came to a local track event in Brisbane. She was there just for publicity (for the event) and did a “record attempt”. She was available before and after and generally just hung out with the crowd. Her medals were left on the table for people to touch and see. She’s just totally awesome. I hope she realises that other cyclists really appreciate what she does and that she gets much more from the sport that she has already given so much too. Bravo!

I have two daughters (7 & 17) who both ride and race BMX and track. They wanted to meet Anna that night at Chandler. I was completely blown away by how accessible and freindly Anna was throughout the entire night. Taking time to talk to both the girls about their dreams in the sport and how to achieve them. Needless to say they both came away completely in awe, and inspired to chase their dreams. She is a true champion, in every sense of the word !

One of the absolute greats… good to see some track actually made it to cycling tips eventually, even if it didn’t during the world champs themselves ;-)

Her facebook and social media profile is also something I think a lot of others could learn from - too many similar athletes “speak” in the third person about themselves and their results instead of being more human, the ongoing series of sad face photos from her dog when she leaves and boundless love when she gets home are great value and blend well with the odd shout out to her sponsors etc, rather than being dry and sterile in the mould of “Bob came third in today’s criterium in brussels. Thanks to shimaNO, XXX bikes and coach for the support”. She interacts, she replies to comments and in turn she inspires more!
