On Sunday, December 14 at 1:30pm AEST the Elite men will be taking to the startline at the Shimano SuperCrit in Port Melbourne. It’s going to be a beautiful day tomorrow and if you’re in the area we encourage you to come down (map).
But if you’re nowhere near Port Melbourne and want your fix of racing during the off-season, you will be able to see it here live.
Not only will it be streamed here live, there will be two on-board cameras that will provide live coverage as well. Possibly a first in cycling history. Thanks to Tom Reynolds and Andy Richardson with their motorsport background (who do this stuff all the time), they’ve hacked together something that will hopefully be the first we’ve seen of this.
Now, a few disclaimers before you we commit too much. This has been successfully tested but not with crowds of thousands around the race course, so we expect there to be technical glitches, such as:
1. 4G coverage is good in the area, but if thousands of spectators are uploading photos and video to social media, then the whole thing could fall over. We have a contingency plan in place, but again, it’s hard to test without a massive crowd environment.
2. Don’t expect professional production standards. We have a four camera mixer with no bells and whistles.
3. Audio may not be provided.
4. Something completely unexpected will happen.
This is more of a proof of concept than a commercial product, so don’t expect too much and thanks for your patience!
If you miss it, we’ll also be recording the event footage, so you can come here and see if shortly after.
