Bikes of the Bunch: Pinarello/Jaguar Dogma F8

In this week's edition of Bikes of the Bunch we bring you the new Pinarello/Jaguar Dogma F8 collaboration, a bike that we'll get to see plenty of during July when Team Sky ride it during the Tour de France.

I was at a function in Sydney last night when I saw the brand new Pinarello/Jaguar Dogma F8 sitting there waiting for its photo to be taken.

For those unfamiliar, the Dogma F8 is a collaboration between Pinarello and Jaguar that sees the latter contributing more than just a sticker on the finished bike’s chainstay. Jaguar apparently provided Pinarello with “advanced aerodynamic knowledge and facilities” to help design the next edition of the Dogma.

In practical terms, Pinarello gave Jaguar a handful of constraints — including wheelbase and geometry measurements — and then it was left to Jaguar to develop the aerodynamic frame. Jaguar used more than 300 iterations of a process known as computational fluid dynamics to optimise the frame’s design before testing it in a wind tunnel.

According to Jaguar and Pinarello the F8 supposedly improves on the aerodynamics, stiffness and weight of the Dogma while maintaining the same handling. I didn’t get my hands on the bike long enough to weigh it, flex it, or even ride it, so I don’t have many details for you at this time. I did however have enough time to gawk at it and bring back these photos to share with you.

The Dogma F8 debuted at the Criterium du Dauphine last week. Will it be the bike that the Tour de France is won on next month?

Before everyone starts to jump in and say “The stem needs to be slammed” and “The wheels are all wrong”, I’ll start with a positive comment and suggest that its the cleanest Di2 integration I’ve ever seen. When they can make it this clean with wires, the case for wireless move down a notch for me…

  Forget the stem what about the Pinarello steerer advertising that is not proportionally offset to the top cap. Just had to say that because that bike is much nicer than my ride and I want to be the first to be petty….he says stamping his feet with his arms crossed.
  Some people do need to get a better perspective on life so I like your positive comment.

  +1 on the Di2 cable set-up appreciation. Di2 is really an aesthetic basket case (at least in this generation). Inexcusable that the top of the line components still require a zip-tie fastener for the junction box on the stem, not to mention why the junction box cannot be integrated in the first place (i.e hidden) in the stem or somewhere else. Shimano own PRO so why haven’t they at the very least made a stem that can hide the junction box?

‘Pro’ are related in Shimano aren’t they? Why can’t they make a stem with a mount for the Di2 junction box, instead of the wrap-around thing? Very nice bike though. Love it.

  I always think the same thing as there are a few weight weenie type specialist stems that have electronics wires integrated if these small specialists can do it why not the big boys (including the guys like Ritchie/3T/et al) With what I have seen the fork has to match, as ther is a port out the back and into the frame.

  I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of Di2 (and am assuming that the junction box doesn’t require regular attention), but why couldn’t a modified junction box be built inside a specially designed stem?

Lack of integration of the Di2 control box has always been an eyesore. At the very least can’t it be glued onto the underside of the stem or something and forgo the tape or whatever it is? I don’t have Di2 so I don’t know but can’t the black box be put into the seat tube along with the battery? Negative comments out of the way, I am glad they changed the fork/seat stay design and made them less curvey. No matter how much I tried, I could not get to like the twisty ones. I like this model very much.

  The front junction box connects the two shifters with the rest of the system.. there has to be a junction there else you’d have to run two cables all the way down to the back. No reason why it couldn’t be better integrated though, except that it could fail and that would be a bigger pain to replace.

    Note that you need that box exposed in order to charge the battery: connecting port is in that box under the stem.
    This said, yes, you can use double side tape and get rid of the zip/elastic band. A much cleaner stem as a result. I did that when building my own bike and it works 110%

      So integrate the junction box into the stem, and use a magnetic charging cable to charge the battery so there isn’t a need for a charging port to collect crud and generate swirly vortices.

I find it hard to get excited about this.

It has a “lower bottle mounting position” because “aero”… see Cervelo S5 from 2011.
It has “FlatBack” aero tubes… see KammTail from Trek & Scott from a few years ago
It’s “aero”, but they won’t give you any figures, so it probably really isn’t that aero at all.

Forks are reminiscent of GB’s track bike program.

The small size that Ritchie Porte rides barely scrapes under the 6.8kg limit, so it appears to be relatively heavy compared to its peers.

It’s a $5500 frame which merely brings Pinarello a bit closer to the other superbike manufacturers but doesn’t seem to push the boundaries anywhere, so it’s a resounding “Meh” from me.

  Contrary to what the manufacturers’ advertising tells you, weight isn’t everything. Just be be glad the terrible Onda forks have gone!

  Yes they are quite late into the aero scene, and I don’t think this outshines its competitors in that aspect. Though I never like the curves on the dogma personally, I think the brand loses quite a bit of tradition without them.

If it ain’t leaking, it probably doesn’t work.

Surely they could fit a few more carbon spacers under the head stem, why not go for a 6ft steerer tube on the forks.

Give me a venge anyday, at least Specialized don’t have a reputation for very poor reliability. :-)

Love it all except the rear brake cable. With the r&d that would have gone into this, they could have integrated the brake into the chainstay for a sleek look, or designed a cable route around the seat tube to reduce the length of external cable.

No. Not for me. Its ok but nothing to get excited about. Am assuming that this is Pinos re polished idea for an aero road Dogma. Visually…Giant Propel, Felt AR Aero, Canyon Aeroad SLX, BMC TMR01 for me.

It really hurts my eyes to look at how the seat post runs into the frame. Take a look at the BMC TMR to see how its done. Liked the old non-aero Dogma a lot better.

  Agree wholeheartedly, probably aero but very lazy design… yuk! The 65 in a small frame was very sexy.

That’s just an ugly bike. I know sky livery is black but I simply cannot get interested in a plain black bike. It’s just lazy and boring.

I would’ve expected more Team Sky livery. There isn’t enough of that sky blue color on the bike. Looks almost… common. Maybe a blue stripe across the middle third of the bike?

The Di2 box is as ugly as they all are. Still looks like a prototype. I also don’t particularly like the way the head-tube extends at the front over the brake mount. It makes the bike look like it has the wrong fork fitted. The caps over the mechanical cable inputs could also be prettier. At this level, they could be eliminated altogether, but that would make 2 frame versions. I’d hardly think that was really a problem for high-end frames like this.

Ugly and wrong. Owners of the current range of muffin mould carbon bikes better put their name on it so they know which one is theirs when they park it up. Most will have Mr. Newby on the top tube. Conned and robbed by marketing departments.

While the di2 junction box might be a bit fugly, that junction of seat stay, seat post and top tube has easily got it topped.

Looks nice, more understated than the current one. The fork is almost reverse-raked to my eye…which makes it look twitchy somehow. Very Cervelo-like around the seatpost. Which isn’t necessarily bad. It would be improved a TON by having Super Record (mech) and Bora’s of course.

Everyone who is saying this is the “aero frame”, it’s not. The F8 is the successor to the Dogma.
