Paris-Nice – Hofland takes Stage 2

Moreno Hofland sprinted to victory Monday in the second stage at Paris-Nice. Hofland’s Belkin teammates positioned the 22-year-old Dutchman perfectly going into a late right-hander in the 205km stage from Rambouillet to Saint-Georges-sur-Baulche, and Hofland had the legs to make a long sprint to snag victory ahead of John Degenkolb of Germany. Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni crossed the line third to defend the leader’s jersey in the eight-day French race.

Hofland said, “It’s a great victory. The team rode great today. The stage was hectic again, because there were some crosswinds. We all tried to be in the front at the dangerous points,” a happy Hofland said after the podium ceremony. “I wanted to surprise the bunch, so I made a long sprint. I jumped with 250 metres to go, and no one came around me. I am so happy, because this is a big race. This is Paris-Nice!”

Meersman penalised for drafting

Giro d’Italia considering women’s race

RCS Sport is considering a women’s race to run in conjunction to the Giro d’Italia. Race organiser General Manager Paolo Bellino explained to Cycling Weekly that they are discussing it.

“It’s not at the top of our list but it’s also not the last item,” Bellino told Cycling Weekly. “We are looking over a series of things, including something for the women. It’s an important subject. We want to be modern and up to date like we’ve always been.”

“A new event that will give an even more universal dimension to the Tour,” a press release said. “A few hours before the men’s peloton arrives in Paris … the world’s elite women cyclists will race the circuit in the historic heart of the city.”

Campagnolo has issued a press release which includes details on their new 2015 Super Record RS groupset. The new groupset will be offered in limited quantities and for a limited time.

The key area for development has been its front shifting. Campy says that they are acting on feedback from the many professional athletes riding its products – with some riders still preferring a mechanical groupset over their electronic EPS.

Campag says, “The project was aimed at increasing both performance as well as reliability even in extreme conditions although most changes won’t be easily recognizable to the naked or untrained eye. While at first sight the groupset appears quite similar to the previous version, several angles and shapes were modified throughout the drivetrain with the most significant changes being concentrated on the chainrings and front derailleur design. While the average cyclist might not realize the intricacies of a chainring; how each and every tooth has its own shape, how the internal surface is designed for specific performance and how the two perform in unison for faster and more efficient chain engagement”

Buy knock-off bike products and risk death, support slavery

According to Robbert de Kock, Secretary General of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) who spoke at the Taipei Bike Show last week, if you buy a counterfeit bike on an internet site like Alibaba, you not only run the risk of injury or even death, you could also be supporting organised crime like drug trafficking and prostitution. The problem of counterfeits in the bike industry has become so great that fakes might even be finding their way into local bike shops.

In a presentation by the WFSGI to members of the bike industry at Taipei Cycle last week, Michele Provera (below), Vice President of Internet Brand Protection at Convey, a company that specialises in internet brand protection, said, “We’re not dealing with sweatshop factories, we’re dealing with very sophisticated organisations who launder money they gain from drug dealing, from prostitution, from slavery.

Team Sky and Orica-GreenEDGE Round 1 – Rock, Paper, Scissors

Team Sky and Orica-GreenEDGE have joined forces to produce a series of fun and engaging YouTube ‘Battle’ videos.

All five episodes of the #SKYvOGE series were filmed during the 2014 Tour Down Under and will be released on a fortnightly basis from Monday 10 March.

The opening episode sees the two teams contest a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Future episodes are currently being kept tightly under wraps, but Team Sky’s Digital Manager Nick Howes was able to shed some light on how the Battle Series came about: “The goal of the Battle Series was to show another side to our team away from the racing. Our fans don’t often get to see that side to us because once the races start everyone is so professional. There are some big characters in Team Sky – both riders and staff members – and that really comes through in the Battles.
