I got to see this documentary last week and have to admit that I didn’t have high expectations. How many times can we hear this same story? I must admit however, no matter how many variations of this I read or see, it continues to fascinate me. We see lots of new interview footage with Lance and other teammates and it’s interesting to watch with hindsight. We see many shades of Lance throughout the film and the footage with him straight after his Oprah interview is enlightening.
About the film
In 2008 director Alex Gibney set out to make a film about Lance Armstrong and his career, centred around his comeback to cycling and the 2009 Tour de France. Gibney had amassed more than 200 hours of footage that he condensed into a Armstrong comeback movie.
As the film was in the final stages of editing Tyler Hamilton’s appearance on 60 Minutes solidified suspicions of Armstrong’s doping, and Gibney realised that the original movie he set out to create “would never fly”.
After questioning key characters in the Armstrong story, and after additional interviews with Armstrong himself, the film was re-edited.
The appeal of Gibney’s film lies not in the admission that we know is coming, but in looking at earlier footage of Armstrong with the luxury of hindsight.
Here’s an excerpt from the film’s promo:
“Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) masterfully explores the fall of the disgraced cycling champion following the 2009 Tour de France, making use of his extraordinary access to attain rare interviews with former teammates, alleged doping mastermind Dr. Michele Ferrari, and Armstrong himself.
