The women’s Battle on the Border Murwillumbah Town Centre Criterium, part of the Subaru Cycling Australia National Road Series, was called off and the men’s event cancelled due to an incident in the women’s race.
Late in the women’s criterium an accident involving a single rider required an ambulance on course, which saw the race neutralised. Due to the length in time spent attending to the felled rider, it was decided by the chief commissaire the race would be called off.
Officials then adjudicated that sprint points from the race would stand and count towards the overall sprint leader’s classification, however, no other result in the race would be posted and the general classification remains as was after the morning’s second-stage individual time trial.
The rider involved in the incident was taken to hospital for precautionary scans.
With the extended delay from the incident in the women’s race leading to concerns over dwindling light, the chief commissaire inspected the course and consulted with team managers. After careful consideration, the proceeding men’s criterium was cancelled for safety reasons.
