The decisive move of the stage through the Murwillumbah region came after just 18 kilometres, when Griffiths, Corset and Emily Roper (Suzuki Bontrager) broke away on the first significant climb of the stage.
The trio gradually built up a 1min 22sec lead after 38 kilometres, before the pair shook clear of the teenage Roper inside the final 40 kilometres.
The pair continued to work well together, maintaining a sizeable lead. In the final few kilometres it was clear the peloton was not a threat to the leaders and a sprint was on for the day’s honours.
“Ruth and I worked really well together all the way to the finish and we were milking the time gap,” said Victoria’s Griffiths, 31.
“I knew the last couple of climbs would disorganise the chase a little bit – I was pretty confident when we had 20kms to go and we had a minute lead.”
“I’m not known for my sprinting, so I thought if I forced Ruth to lead it out and with the wind, I had a chance of getting around her,” Griffiths explained.
Queensland’s Corset, 35, was happy with how the race unfolded.
“Our team plan was to make it aggressive right from the start because we knew we didn’t have a sprinter – my teammate Zoe Watters attacked early and I countered from her up the climb.
“I didn’t think [Miranda] and I would stay away, [but] we were rotating really well together.”
“My legs were cramping badly towards the end, I was completely wrecked, (and) Miranda hesitated so I went early, but she was too strong.”
Subaru NRS Series Leader Garfoot was pleased with the team’s two placings.
“As it came to the finish I just tried to find the best sprinters and sit on their wheel and I had fresher legs than they did.”
Griffiths will wear the leader’s yellow jersey when the Tour continues on Saturday May 4, with an Individual Time Trial before a Criterium in Murwillumbah, New South Wales.
The 2013 Subaru NRS will see a total of 17 individual events to be held across the nation, including six combined men’s and women’s events and a total of 77 days of racing.
