The Rastro Climb

By Paul Calver on September 17, 2011

One of my commercial assignments took me to the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Santa Catarina is popular among surfers but its mountain ranges are also starting to become popular for cyclists. This photo of is of the SC-438, a road which snakes its way up the Serra Do Rastro mountain range in southeast Santa Catarina. It's an epic climb (21.7km) in a part of the world little known to European cyclist. It's the best feeling when you can get to the top of a climb like this and you can look all the way back down to where you started. And for those of you wondering whether there's a Strava segment for the climb: yep http://app.strava.com/segments/872753

I’v just returned to the UK from Santa Catarina where I have been working on a new tour – I’m a Tour Leader for Saddle Skedaddle Ltd http://www.skedaddle.co.uk. I read about and saw photos of Serra Do Rio Do Rastro a few years ago and it is the main reason I chose the region as new destionation – I was not disappointed! Hopefully, from the summer of 2014 onwards, we’ll be bringining European cyclists to enjoy the climb and the rest of the stunning Santa Catarina scenery. I can’t wait to go back!
