Sagan wins stage 2 in Oman
By ASO on February 12, 2013
Peter Sagan celebrated his first win of the season with panache. The
second stage featured two climbs in the later part of the race which
caused a major split in the peloton. The leading group during the split
consisted of the key contenders Alberto Contador (Team Saxo-Tinkoff),
Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), Chris Froome (Team Sky), Bradley Wiggins (Team
Sky), Cadel Evans and Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team), Joaquim
Rodriguez (Katusha), Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Leopard).
During the post race interviews Sagan gave his account of what had
happened on the final climb of the stage: "It was difficult after the
descent, Nibali attacked with two other riders and nobody wanted to
work. I pulled on the front going at about 45kph, but everybody else
left a gap. So I just went at the same pace on the last short climb,
caught the others and then I attacked alone and arrived alone. The
finish suited me but you always need the legs to win. I had them today."
Sagan also takes the race leader's jersey and is nine seconds ahead of
Tony Gallopin (RadioShack Leopard) in second place and 15 seconds ahead
of Vincenzo Nibali(Astana Pro Team) who is in fourth place.
