Bikes Of The Peloton :: 2013 ProTeam Rides

Today marked the beginning of the 2013 World Tour season with Andre Greipel winning Stage One of the Tour Down Under. Yesterday I was able to track down most of the 2013 ProTeam bikes and managed to bring back a peek from the Tour Village. Which are your favorites?

: Movistar’s Pinarello Dogma 65.1 Think2 with Campagnolo EPS and Boras.

: Philippe Gilbert’s BMC Team Machine SLR01 with Shimano Di2 (with sprint shifters), and Shimano C50 wheels which are very popular in the peloton this year.

: Andy Schleck’s custom painted Trek Madone that just arrived to the TDU. Shimano Di2 groupset and Bontrager parts & wheels.

: Radioshack-Leopard’s Trek Madone equipped with Shimano Di2 and Bontrager wheels and components. This is Andy Schleck’s 2012 bike, but the 2013 bikes won’t be changing much except for running Dura Ace 11-speed.

: Ag2r-La Mondiale’s Focus Izalco equipped with Campagnolo EPS groupset and Fulcrum wheels. This one belongs to Mikaël Cherel of France.

: Argos-Shimano’s Felt F1 equipped with Shimano Di2 and Dura Ace C-50 wheels. The team isn’t riding their 2013 bikes yet, so this is a photo of their 2012 bikes being used at the TDI. Notice the “sprint shifters” on the inside of the handlebar. This one is Marcel Kittel’s 58cm steed.

: Saxo-Tinkoff’s Specialized Venge equipped with SRAM and Zipp wheels and components. Some riders also use the Tarmac, depending on their preference. This ride belongs to Australian Jay McCarthy.

: Astana’s Specialized Tarmac equipped with Campagnolo EPS and Corima wheels.

: Blanco’s new Giant Propel’s equipped with Shimano Di2 and Dura Ace C-50 wheels. This is Graeme Brown’s.

: Team Cannondale’s EVO equipped with SRAM groupset and Vision Wheels. Cannondale isn’t riding their 2013 bikes yet, so this is their 2012′s at the TDU.

: Euskaltel’s Orbea Orca equipped with Shimano Di2 and Dura Ace C-50 wheels. This one belongs to Gorka Izairre of Spain.

: Omega Pharma-Quick Step’s Specialized Tarmac equipped with SRAM and Zipp wheels, handlebar, stem and seatpost. This particular bike belongs to Serge Pauwels from Belgium.

: FDJ’s Lapierre Xelius 400 equipped with Di2 and Shimano wheels. This one belongs to Laurent Mangel of France.

: Lampre’s Merida Scultura SL equipped with Shimano Di2 and Falcrum wheels. This one belongs to Daniele Pietropolli of Italy

: Lotto-Belisol’s Ridley Noah equipped with Campagnolo EPS and Bora wheels. This one belongs to Greg Henderson. Hendo likes the 25mm tyres and narrow 38cm bars.

: Garmin-Sharp’s Cervelo S5 aero bike equipped with Shimano Ultegra Di2, Mavic Cosmic wheels, and Rotor cranksets. This one belongs to Jack Baur of NZ.

: Orica-GreenEDGE’s Scott Foil equipped with Shimano Di2 and Dura Ace wheels. This is Stuart O’Grady’s 2012 model and they haven’t received their 2013 bikes yet. The paintjob isn’t changing but they’ll be receiving Di2 11-speed. You can see above Gerro’s prototype 11-speed Di2 that he’s still using.

: Team SKY’s Pinarello Dogma’s equipped with Shimano Di2 and wheels. This one belongs to Matty Hayman.

: Vacansoleil-DCM Bianchi new Oltre XR equipped with a mix of Campagnolo EPS, FFWD chainsets and wheels. This one belongs to Barry Markus of the Netherlands.

  I’m with you on the aesthetics, much prefer their R series. I’ve read more than once the S5 can be quite unforgiving in it’s ride.

I guess it’s kind of the whole point but some of those bikes are just overboard with manufacturer logos, particularly the Vacansoleil-DCM Bianchi. On this count my vote is for the Sky Pinarello as nicest..

  The Orica-GreenEDGE Scott and Argos-Shimano Felt are not too bad in this regard either, they get my votes for having great liveries and a more tidy design than Sky’s Pinarello.

  I think those teams that run shimano and srm power meters usually adopt older dura ace cranks as they weren’t compatible with 7900 DA.

Out of the ones posted so far I really like the new Giant Propel, although the amount of logos are a bit much and I’d prefer it all black with the white logos. Really looking forward to the BMC bike. I’m assuming it will be the TMR01 Time Machine although many climbers should still be on the SLR01. I wonder what’s next for the SLR01. It’s been unchanged for the most part since its release aside for the paint and seat post.

The headtube on the Cervelo and the Trek as high as Effel tower, hence the negative stem as last solution for the rider to be able to handle this horrible bike.

  Agree. A year or two ago there seemed to be a trend for manufacturers to go up in headtube length. For instance Cervelo changed headtube lengths on the R series on a size 56cm from 160cm to 180cm to give greater rider comfort over race position. For some reason, when the S5 was developed they continued a 180cm headtube, into a aero race bike (go figure?). The S2 series on a 56cm still has the 160cm headtube. Cervelo don’t seem to publish geometry these days on their website? You’re right, the S5 needs a ‘team’ alternative with a lower headtube length.

    The head tube is more aero than a steerer tube with spacers, for a normal rider (they who pay the bills) they won’t need to use (as many) spacers with the taller head tube, thus, more aero.
    Should there be a team issue with a significantly shorter head tube? depends, how many people cannot get a good position using a 17° stem? if they need a more aggressive stem, then maybe, but if it is only one or two riders who would benefit, then from a cost point of view – meh.
    Reality for me is that I would rather see (and use) a 17° or greater stem in use, than a 6° and a stack of spacers, just because some guy decided the ‘team’ bike must be better and so brought it over the better fitting (and in his case faster) non-team edition.

      I am sorry Cape_Horn i have to disagree with you on that, I personally do not buy the Aero thing, how can it be aero to put a rider UP like in arm chair?? you only need 180 headtube if the rider is really tall. and please dont tell use the wind tunnel test, we all ride on the road and not in MClaren’s HQ.

The Pinarello Dogma makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

I much prefer the traditional shaping (eg along the lines of the S-Works Tarmac / Trek / Felt etc – a lot are very very similar though).

I’d take any of them… (but would sell the Dogma)!

RST nice and clean, needs better looking wheels, as with the stylish simplicity of the Sky Pinarello (spoiled by battery and SRM)
FDJ LaPierre is worthy of mention, but needs to lose the PRO branding for something more subtle

All in all I reckon mine looks better, but then I am not a rolling billboard

the Merida paint is Euro-trash tastic. Looks like Pantani inspired the paint job.

By the way, how does Giant get away with the aero tapering on the down tube, surely that would have to infringe on Cervelo Patents on the S5, (if they have any).

    Well this has puzzled me so I’ve had a quick look with the Canadian IP Office. For all Cervelo’s engineering and ingenuity over the years, they have only filed 3 patents in Canada. You would think there is a great deal of IP they would want to protect, and hold the market off.
    
    The only ‘full’ Cervelo bike which seems to be protected (expired now) is the curved seat tube of the TT bike the P3, protected by both Patent and Design Registration.
    
    But what I neglected to remember, is the shaping of the downtube with the flat taper to reduce drag around the bidons was originally introduced in the Scott Foil.
    
    On searching, again there’s no apparent Design or Patent registration. Which made me think, whilst we see incarnations, with so much IP in bikes these days, and the industry such a competitive market, with bike designs 2-3 years out, why don’t manufacturers protect their IP so much in frame design?
