A video from website Bicycled Bikes, claims to show bicycles being made out of scrapped cars has gone viral. Is it all it seems? We’re not so certain. Where did the tubes and wheels come from? Have a read at road.cc.
Don’t believe the hype. Cars are made out of sheet metal, clamped together and joined by spots welds. This technique is much cheaper and lighter than tubular construction (for automotive applications that is)
Yes, it seems unlikely. Cars are generally made from low-carbon mild steel which would need to be much thicker to match the strength of the 4130 chromoly steel traditionally used for bicycle construction.
