A Level Above
By Jarrod Partridge on January 5, 2013
So over the second KOM point today, the breakaway got over, then the field split into two groups, we were on the moto behind group 1 and Stuey came to the back to get a bidon. He was waiting for ages, but the car/Sram bike couldn't get to him because of the second bunch being in the way. So he casually waited. It took a good 3-4 minutes for the second group to catch them, and the Sram bike came up to him.
He grabbed some bottles, had a bit of a chat to the SRAM guys, then bang!
Two peddle strokes later and he was gone like a shot!
We were chasing at 70km on this descent and we couldn't catch him, we didn't see him again until the bottom of the descent, and he wouldn't have blown out a candle.
While he was waiting for the bottle riding as casually as you like, some of the younger guys around him were on their absolute limit.
When he took off, he passed 10 guys in about 15 metres!
It's been like that a lot the last couple of days.
Same with Greg Henderson. One minute Hendo's at the back relaxing, he turns the gas on for 30 seconds and he's back at the front again. Amazing to see the level above the rest these experienced World Tour riders are.
