Victorian Calvin Watson celebrated his 20th birthday in the best possible fashion, becoming the youngest ever winner in 60 editions of Australia’s oldest stage race, the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

Riding for Jayco – VIS Apollo after he was cut from the national under-23 squad at the end of last season, Watson was “fuelled by a bit of anger” as he overcame a 14 second deficit to overnight leader Aaron Donnelly to claim the win in the 93km Searoad Ferries final stage up Arthurs Seat on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Watson finished 21st on the stage, but was a crucial 49 seconds ahead of Donnelly who battled gallantly in 29th spot to hold on to second place overall, with New Zealand’s Josh Atkins, in third place overnight, fading to finish in 40th spot, 1min 15sec behind Watson, but good enough to fill the final place on the overall podium in third.

The stage was won by Donnelly’s teammate Nathan Earle, with the 24-year-old Tasmanian given the imprimatur of his Huon Salmon-Genesys Wealth Advisors team to chase the win once it became clear that the yellow jersey had slipped through the team’s grasp.

The first four riders in the overall standings are under-23, underlying the growing band of Australian and New Zealand riders hungry for success at this level.

Riding his first ever ‘Sun Tour’, twice weekly training rides on the punishing climb at Arthurs Seat were hailed as the secret behind Watson’s success. Based in Frankston, just 15km from the finish line, punishing motor pacing sessions up the mountain the recipe for the win.

“This is my backyard and you couldn’t ask for a better place to train. I knew the climb back-to-front and I knew where I could ease off and where I had to really dig deep and I knew every corner and that really played into our hands,” Watson said.

“We knew we had to put Donnelly under pressure so we raced for the win and that was our tactic and it paid of in the end because we got to the bottom (of the first climb) and Donnelly and Josh were straight out the back. We knew we had to race aggressive in the wind so it paid off.”

Watson came ready to race after three months of dedicated preparation with VIS coach Dave Sanders, keen to show the national program coaches he was worthy of a spot on the Australian under 23 squad.

“I was fuelled by a bit of anger and disappointment at being left out of the national program, so I’m happy I can show I’m a real force in Australian cycling,” Watson said.

“We came here as underdogs and we really showed the guys we weren’t here to mess around and the boys did a phenomenal job to look after me today and without them this victory wasn’t possible.”

Watson said he couldn’t believe he was going to win until the finish line.

“When we started climbing Arthurs Seat and I looked back and Josh was out of sight, that’s when I really knew that I had to suffer those last few kilometres to make it happen.”

Earle got to the lead in the final kilometre and attacked to take the stage win after a pulsating final 30minutes of racing that took in two climbs of Arthurs Seat.

“The crowd’s amazing up here and it’s a stage that suited me. The plan was to look after Aaron to the base of the climb, and keep him in the best shape we could. When we got to the climb I was told just to follow not attack, the first and second time, just follow.”

“It’s been a very successful tour for the team. It would have been nice to win, but we did everything we could. To get two stage wins, a second in the prologue, second overall and the sprinters jersey, it’s been a good week,” Earle said.

Donnelly said he did all he could.

“I left everything out there, I rode my heart out. The boys were awesome and I couldn’t do anything more, I was beaten by a better man on the day.”

Donnelly began the day with a slender 14 second lead over Watson, with Atkins a further three seconds adrift. The star-studded Jayco Australian team had two riders poised to pounce in Simon Gerrans and Simon Clarke, both 2mins 45sec behind the lead.

As expected reigning champion Nathan Haas (Jayco Australian Team) went on a small attack early in the race to take the points in the first Budget Forklift King of the Mountain to secure the polka dot jersey.

Shortly following, the first major breakaway took a stab at stealing the race. A group of 14, including Australian stalwart Stuart O’Grady, New Zealander James Oram, and Bernard Sulzberger (Drapac Cycling) settling off the front.

The break established a maximum lead of 1min 47sec at 60km before an active peloton began to break it down.

Neil Van Der Ploeg (Search2Retain) took out the Hec Sutherland Memorial Sprint, named in honour of the 1954 Sun Tour champion following his passing. The win put Van Der Ploeg equal on points with Donnelly for the Grays Online Green Sprinters jersey, a classification Donnelly ended up winning on count back.

Whilst it’s the yellow jersey he’ll covet forever, for his efforts, Watson was also the winner of Victoria’s best under-23 rider.
