The Winners Of The Last 15 Tour de France

Everyone loves an interactive infographic. Here's a good one I came across today on the Sydney Morning Herald which shows the Tour de France winners over the past 15 years if sanctions were carried out on all riders implicated in doping scandals.

Of course not all implicated riders in this chart have had their results stripped. The UCI will disqualify all results achieved by Lance Armstrong from August 1, 1998 including his seven Tour de France victories. Floyd Landis’ Tour de France win in 2006 has been stripped and so has Alberto Contador in 2010. Jan Ullrich was also stripped of his 2005 third place finish.

  Good eye. If you google images of “Andrei Kivilev” there is a gallery of Vino mislabeled as Kivilev (http://pexi.smugmug.com/Sports/La-Laurentine-Andrei-Kivilev/8382235_WS43Sn/550069303_KKnWZ#!i=550069303&k=KKnWZ). The author probably got it from that.

    He was found to have Salbutamol (Ventolin) in his system, but was later cleared on medical grounds. Also worth noting that Ventolin does absolutely nothing for non-asthmatics, besides give them cotton mouth and headaches if they take way too much

      Do your research mate, salbutamol dilates the bronchi (widens the breathing tubes) to make larger volumes of air to shift

        @Herewego – perhaps before you shoot your mouth off, you might care to “research” the subject a little yourself. As any GP or physiologist will tell you, salbutamol has not been shown to have any useful effect for non-asthmatics, or people without bronchiospasm.
        I don’t think you even need a TUE for salbutamol any more (happy to be proved wrong, I’m just using my GP’s say so and the ASADA web site’s say so).

Heras, Rasmussen, Beloki implicated in Puerto (cleared by the Spanish Fed (stop laughing at the back!)), Escartin implicated in Ferrari doping in 2004 documents and alleged part of Kelme doping program, Bobby Julich = RIDER4 (let’s see what Sky do with him), Kloden paid a doping-related fine, Pereiro explicitly implicated by Landis, Menchov (ha ha). The list goes on and on.

Easier to guess (and it is only a guess) who you faith in on the above list: I’d say Sastre, Evans, Wiggins, TJvG, perhaps Froome (I say perhaps because his rise has been meteoric so I blame noone for asking questions) & perhaps Nibali (although the news coming out of Italy ain’t good about Liquigas and Lampre).

Guys, let’s not get into implicating people who haven’t been officially sanctioned. It’s dangerous to draw conclusions based on what’s been read in a book or on cyclingnews.

I was on the Champs Élysées for the final stage in 1999 and while I admit I didn’t ride any of the stages I may have been the cleanest cyclist there. Nothing in my system but Kronenburg 1664, I would be prepared to accept the Maillot Jaune to assist the UCI in cleaning up it’s history.

Interesting how Puerto correlates with the total evaporation of Spanish success after totally dominating prior to it surfacing. Understand the goal here is not to speculate, but WOW that paints a clear picture!

      Too true, Fuentes himself has been quoted saying he is not sure why all the fuss was about cycling, it half was the “suspect list” which included the entire Liberty team including people who have been unequivocally cleared. I think it ended up about 20% outstanding (case closed but they were not cleared) and about 10% convicted

Not defending contador or Rassmusen but in the years that Rasmussen was eliminated from the Tour was due to not being where he said he was not for a failed drug test. And Contador in 07 he well he wasnt doping or eating contaminated beef, its very skewed this diagram.

Why is Heras in the roster?

I never liked pro cycling growing up. It always looked pretty boring and dull compared to Michael Jordan throwing down dunks from the foul line. I took up cycling 12 months ago to ride with my mates on Beach Rd on the weekends. They helped explained the intricacies of pro cycling and the Tour and I began to appreciate what pro riders must go through. Clicking on that graph above just makes you realise how much of it has been BS the past 15 years. I can only imagine how crushing all this must be for young guys out there training and busting there chops to make the VIS / AIS / and eventually a pro team in Europe. Their heroes shot down in flames.

I’m beginning to feel about Cadel Evans that I feel about Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox. They have both had successful careers amid drug cheats. They deserve better recognition.

  Allow me to be the devils advocate; why is he clean? Because he is Australian? T-Mobile, Mapei, BMC – hardly the cleanest teams out there…not to mention the Ferrari “connection” and the fact he’s beaten plenty of guys that were known to be doping at the time.
  
  Having said that he would be one of the few guys in the peloton that I would be happy to put money on being clean – along with the obvious ones like Moncoutie.

    Johnson – if you keep up with the goss’ on pro cycling, you’ll pick up that while it’s easy to beat the drug tests, it’s harder to cover up circumstantial evidence. there has been a tonne of it on Lance for many years, to the point where you’d have to still believe in the tooth fairy to believe he was clean. to varying degrees, the same goes for a range of other riders, particularly those with established connections to doctors who speciality is doping. Cadel has virtually none of those - his meeting with Ferrari was fleeting and by all accounts he was ostracised at T-Mobile, despite being probably the strongest rider on the team. other pros are effusive in their praise of him as a clean rider – guys like Contador received nothing like that response from his peers when he tested positive. Cadel’s been a pro for many years and has never even been accused of doping – a remarkable feat considering the train wreck that’s taken place all around him. i’d suggest there’s most likely a simple reason for that - he’s clean.

As you’ve all seen looks like Yates jumped instead of being pushed, and British Cycling are investigating the use of drugs throughout cycling, including in amateur ranks.
There have been well documented busts, Hilton McMurdo in Perth, and some pretty reliable information (contents in the ‘party’ fridge) of riders from O2 here in Melbourne.

Are we ever safe from the cheats, it’s either the wealthy set with there toys or the dopers trying to get an advantage, can’t we just get to ride our bikes.
