Race Report

(via press release)

DUTCHMAN Floris Goesinnen has successfully raided the 2012 Campolina Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic in what he describes as the biggest triumph of his career.

The Drapac Professional Cycling member claimed honours in the 117-year-old race after outsprinting young NSW rider Aaron Donnelly following a gallant breakaway by the pair.

It took Goesinnen seven hours and 23 seconds to complete the epic 262km classic, which welcomed a record-breaking 234 entries.

Goesinnen was well-aware of the importance of the iconic race, which last had an international victor in 2005 (Jonas Ljungblad).

“Everybody in Australia and even in Europe knows the Melbourne to Warrnambool,” he said.

“Honestly, the Melbourne to Warrnambool was the only race I knew about before I came over, so it’s pretty cool to win it.”

The 28-year-old and Donnelly defied the usual trend of the race, skipping ahead with about 40 kilometres remaining and hanging on.

They stretched out their lead to one minute and 44 seconds inside the final 20kms before a last-ditch effort from the large chasing group, which gradually chipped away at the gap.

But it wasn’t enough to reel in Goesinnen and Donnelly, who crossed the Raglan Parade finish line 35 seconds ahead of third placegetter Bradeley Hall (Plan B Racing).

The top-two riders made their move after the Aussie Farmers Dairy-sponsored Lakes and Craters hill climbs near Camperdown, which marked the finish line for the 200km Victorian Championship, sponsored by Wyndham City Council.

Drapac’s Rhys Pollock, the 2010 Melbourne to Warrnambool champion, comfortably took out the state title, while he later collected the SEW Eurodrive Sprint and Lady Bay Resort King of the Mountains jerseys.

Goesinnen, who is in his second year with Drapac, believed the depth of the team’s line-up laid the foundations for its success today.

“I think it was our strength today, that we never had to chase anything because of whoever we had in whatever breaks,” he said.

Pollock and New Zealand legend Gordon McCauley were in a prominent breakaway of 12 for majority of the race.

The group built a six-and-a-half minute advantage before it was whittled down by the Lakes and Craters.

Goesinnen said the undulating terrain in last week’s Caterpillar Underground Mining Tour of Tasmania proved beneficial for him today, particularly after he pulled up well from the six-day event.

“It was a lot of short, intense rides, so it was good to . . . be in the best condition,” he said.

Donnelly, who rode for the Aussie Farmers Direct team, was proud to be on the podium, especially after recovering from a crash about 11 kilometres into the race, which started at Werribee Racecourse.

“I then spent 80kms chasing to get back,” he said.
“I was very close to getting off the bike at the first feed station.” He was naturally pleased that he kept fighting.

“I’m very, very, very happy,” he said.
Crino Cycles First Female honours went to the only female in the field, Nadine O’Connor.

The St Kilda Cycling Club member crossed the line in 8:01.09 to fulfill a long-time goal of gaining a treasured finish medallion.

“I’m not taking this off for a week,” the jubilant rider said.

“I’ve represented my state and my country in netball but this is by far my biggest achievement.”

O’Connor kept with the main bunch for the first 160kms before the 36-year-old was caught up in a crash prior to the Lismore feed station.

“Then I did 40kms by myself and was seriously questioning myself, thinking ‘what am I doing here?’,” the Staytrue Giant rider said.

“But then one of my teammates, Nick Bensley, came up and he was fantastic, supporting me and getting me home.”

It was the first time in three years that a female had finished the iconic race by the 100- minute cut-off, with O’Connor already a favourite to take out first female honours again in 2013.

“This was a two-year plan for me,” she said. “I’ll be back next year.”

Warrnambool City Council presented a jersey to Matthew Lane, who was the first Warrnambool rider home.

The Cycling Australia Subaru National Road Series leader is Team Budget Forklifts’ Luke Davison, who will be aiming to retain the jersey after tomorrow’s Campolina Shipwreck Coast Classic.

Majority of today’s field will also be contesting the 116.7km classic, which starts at Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill at 11.30am for women and 11.45am for men.
It has welcomed a record field of 160 riders, including 48 women.
