GoPro Announces The HERO3

There are a few products I get excited about and the GoPro is definitely one of them. It seems like yesterday when they blew us away with the HEREO2 and now they've just announced the HERO3.

Why do I love to GoPros so much? Because their promotional videos make me think I can do the same thing, when in reality all I can cut together on a road bike is this (shot on the HERO1). They sure have come a long way in three years…

Lots of incredible improvements.

The high end resolution grabs your attention, but it’s the ability to take super slo-mo 120 frames per second at 720P that will be really useful.

And the fun bit will be the ability to an iPhone as a monitor (albeit with a few second delay). No more waiting to get home to see what you got.

GoPros have always looked like a kid’s toy, but they’re really showing the likes of Canon, Nikon and Sony how to do this stuff.

  The monitor app would have been useful for us just yesterday – mate with GoPro, new chest mount, a day of riding, a day of footage of the stem. D’oh!

  Don’t know if I’d group GoPro’s with either Nikon or Canon. Neither have really ever tried to get into the POV market with video cameras. Sony has always had some sort of POV camera but up until their release of their new unit had always been a professional line camera with a lens connected by cable to a recorder (similar to Panasonics attempt).

    Not comparing like-for-like Faz – just a reflection that in 2012 having a $2000 camera body (not to mention the cost of my lenses) which doesn’t interact with my phone, doesn’t have inbuilt GPS, can’t upload to the web, etc, seems quite old-fashioned.
    
    The old paradigm , represented by Canon, Nikon and Sony, see companies with a couple of dozen camera models to ostensibly cater for every conceivable niche the marketing department can come up with.
    
    GoPro is taking the ‘Apple’ approach – tightly focus on creating a very limited number of products which produce great results and which are incredibly easy to use.

Any idea on how long the battery life is? The website doesn’t quote anything, anyone already with a Hero 2 have any ideas? Also how many Gig/hour is needed at 1080p/60fps? cheers

  Use one for the race car, depends a bit on what you have attached, with the WiFi not great, 1.5 to 2 hours, though that is variable because the WiFi has its own battery that draws from the main unit if flat. But with extended battery (on GP2 you can t connect both at the same time) it would be more than 4.

  I’ve had a GoPro Hero 2 for a few years now so the battery is “old” but I still get at least 1 hour (my daily round trip commute) and probably about 2 hours out of it normally.

Great stuff. But I always found a GoPro too “big” on a bike.

Does anybody have experience with the Bullet HD by Rollei (http://www.bullethd.us/bullethd-best-wearable-sports-waterproof-helmet-camera/bullethd-pro2/)?

  i have a Jumbo 808 – $60 with battery pack on Ebay. it’s not super high quality but it is pretty decent with 720p. i think the frame rate is inferior to what you’ll get with GoPro and the like, but the advantage is it’s much smaller.

  I agree it it too large for a bike without being unwieldy, or plain ugly
  Biggest thing with the GoPro2 is ease of use for quality, broadcasters will take the footage

  I have the original Bullet HD and I can say the quality is very good. I used it to record riding thru France last year, and have used it on TT bike. Only problem with it that you do have to guess the angle when mounted on your helmet. Otherwise highly recommended
