LUKE Davison has taken a step towards achieving a pair of ultimate cycling goals after being crowned champion of the Jayco Tour of the Murray River.

The Team Budget Forklifts rider added his name to a notable honour roll, which has seen numerous past winners progress to illustrious careers.

It’s what Davison hopes to do, with the ambitious 22-year-old aiming to reach the elite level in both track and road cycling.

Over the past eight days he has showcased his prowess on the road, finishing with four victories out of the 14 stages, which culminated with today’s 60km Mighty Murray criterium in Swan Hill.

Davison finished second in the criterium behind Genesys Wealth Advisers’ Joel Pearson to seal overall honours and gain the Subaru National Road Series leader’s jersey.

The Murray tour was the third leg of the SCODY Cup, with Davison describing the series as a stepping stone.

“Ideally, the short-term goal is to go to the Commonwealth Games (as a track cyclist),” the triple world junior champion said.

“My coach Tim Decker has been really supportive.

“I guess it’s a matter of building up that base and riding in some World Cups.”

The versatile Sydney rider also holds high hopes for his road career.

“Long-term, I’d like to turn professional, whether that be an Australian professional team or overseas,” he said.

“But I just want to keep taking it a step at a time.
“You don’t want to over think things and get too far ahead.

“I just want to keep doing my best, whether that’s winning a tour or just winning a stage. “It takes baby steps before making a huge step.”

Davison’s meteoric rise started at the SCODY Cup opener, last month’s Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland.

It marked his first competitive hit-out in a month following a serious crash while training, which resulted in him being confined to bed for three weeks with a fractured eye socket.

Being off the bike was cathartic as Davison used the time to figure out where he wanted to take his career in the next few years.

He returned mentally refreshed and has since amassed 10 stage victories in the SCODY Cup, which he stressed was because of his Budget Forklifts teammates.

“People see me crossing the line and throwing my hands in the air but there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work, especially from my teammates,” he said.

“They’re riding at the front constantly and putting their faith in me.

“You do feel the pressure but I think to be a successful athlete, you have to thrive off that pressure.”

Davison collected three titles at the 2008 World Junior Track Championships in South Africa – in the madison, omnium and team pursuit.

He then joined the AIS but conceded a stint in Italy didn’t suit his style of racing, taking about six months off before joining Team Budget Forklifts in 2011.

“This is my most successful tour to date,” he said.
“I’m extremely proud of the effort the boys have put in.”

With 16 intermediate sprints, there were plenty of time bonuses up for grabs in today’s 40- lap race.

Team Budget Forklifts’ tactics paid off early, often forming a sea of yellow up the front to help Davison extend his GC lead, which was 34 seconds prior to the finale. He already had the Campolina Criterium jersey sewn up.

There were numerous attempts at breakaways in the opening 30 laps – including several by eventual Tourism Victoria most aggressive winner Jacob Kauffman (Charter Mason Drapac) – but they didn’t stick.

Drapac Professional Cycling’s Malcolm Rudolph was the pick of the riders in the sprints, winning half of them to jump to overall second in the GC.

Davison looked ominous approaching the home stretch but it was Pearson who triumphed for his second stage win of the tour.

“I just decided to save the legs a little bit for that finish,” the 2010 Murray winner said.

Genesys – which had three Jayco leaders during the week in Pearson, Campbell Flakemore and SCODY Cup leader Anthony Giacoppo – topped the team GC ahead of Drapac.

“We’re a bit disappointed,” Pearson said.

“We came here for the overall win and we gave it everything the other day in the Euston criterium.

“It was our undoing, trying to go for that win.
“To Luke’s credit, he was the strongest on the day.”

GPM Wilson Racing’s Josh Taylor took home two jerseys – the Tasco Inland sprint and Beechworth Bakery King of the Mountains.

“I couldn’t be happier,” the 21-year-old said.

Jayco Honey Shotz rider Aaron Donnelly also had double reason to celebrate, claiming the Euston Club Resort rising star and the Tourism Victoria most aggressive.

The NSW rider also rounded out the tour podium – an exceptional effort considering his team was reduced to only two riders.

“It was always the plan, to come here and race aggressively,” he said. “There are a lot of fast sprinters in the bunch.
“At the end of the day, the only way to get a result was to get away.”

Today marked the first time in the event’s 17-year history that Swan Hill had hosted the final stage.
