SUVelo Open Racing (2012) - 12 August 2012
Gareth was welcomed back from his trip to Pommyland and as a gift to everyone he brought some delightful weather conditions back with him. Good to have you back G, no really… Wind gusts up to 30 knots had racers opting for the low profile rims and keeping the arm warmers and gilets firmly on.
A Grade men’s saw the biggest line up of the day with good representation from GPM as well as the SUVelo Race Squad. Even with the larger bunch size there was nowhere to hide with the race getting blown apart early on with attacks by GPM. Danial Bonello (Plan B, MWCC) claimed the win with a late solo break. SUVelo’s Jared Triggs (St George NRS) edged out fellow club man Alex Wong (GPM) in the sprint for second.
B Grade was a tussle between MWCC and SUVelo riders with each attack being reeled in by the other club only to have a counter attack quickly follow. Ultimately the result went to David Watkinson of Manly with SUVelo Club President Andrew Best taking 2nd (welcome back to racing Besty) and Lex Feltham third.
The C and D grade men’s races were aggressively contested right from the start – possibly due to the extra incentive of a ‘most aggressive rider’ prize as donated by Sports Focus Physio in the form of some 2XU compression socks. The fall out from the quick start meant that the field quickly dissolved into small groups and individuals trying to get back in contact.
The C grade podium was dominated by SUVelo with Chris Jameson first across the line followed by Nicholas Simpson and Alex Jacenko.
In D grade John Mason of DHBC claimed first with Brett McLeod (SUVelo) second and Russel Copeman (DHBC) third.
In the B grade women’s racing it was all SUVelo, Gina Ricardo first with fellow uni student Rosie Stewart second and Tegan Cox third. Not satisfied with only 35 minutes of racing, Gina then turned around and lined up for women’s A grade – champion!
Women’s A it came down to a sprint finish with Melissa Neumaier (SUVelo) edging out Stephanie Lord (ESCC) and Laura Triggs (Southern Cross) for the placings.
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers – marshals Kelvin Rundle, Ian Roberts and Peter Hynd. Place spotters Rosie Stewart and Will Holmes A Court.
Neil Bradshaw for commissaire duty, Jo Bradshaw and Sal Hannaford for handling the sign on and Jarrod Scott of Sports Focus Physio for being the first aid representative (thankfully not needed).
CLUB MESSAGES:Next month we have a change of venue for the SUVelo racing – out at Dunc Gray crit circuit. Stay tuned for start times and details and do try to come along, it’s a wonderful facility and a lot of fun to race on.
