Omnium Finals

By Cor Vos on August 5, 2012

Glenn O’Shea, current Omnium World Champion, came in 5th in the final overall standings in London last night. Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark put in a spectacular ride to bring home Gold after a massive effort to salvage a crash in the scratch race and chase down a breakaway of eight who had lapped the field, Hansen was able to ride the second fastest kilometer time trial to secure his overall victory over Bryan Coquard of France.

Scott McGrory had an interesting insight on the Omnium which he shared on his Facebook wall today:

“The IOC/UCI slash Track Cycling events for the Games and the Omnium comes in. Yet they run it without a rest day from the Team Pursuit in a program that runs for six days. Effectively turning a 6 event race into 9 if you’re a top TP rider.

14 of the 18 starters did not ride the TP, or were knocked out after the qualifying round.
Only O’Shea and Clancy rode all 3 TP rounds. Hmm I wonder why they struggled in the Scratch Race, it was only their 8th consecutive race…

Lasse Hansen’s rode two rounds of TP so well done to him for a solid Omnium win.”

I agree, even if the Woman and Men ran concurrently and over an extra day (more rest between events) it would have been better than loading it up.

…but as the devils advocate the schedule was known and riders/coaching staff should adjust their program to suit.
