Chasing The Tour – Stage 5

Stage 5 from Rouen to Saint-Quentin brought the Tour back East just over top of Paris to set up for the race in the Alps. The stage went perfectly to script; A small breakaway who took their chances early which nearly paid off. It's always exhilarating watching the breakaway get gobbled up in the final 500m. You know they're doomed but there's nothing better than when they pull it off!

: Still a long way left to go to Paris

: What’s a typical day in the life of these podium girls for three weeks in July? I had a good chat with these two lovely ladies at the Tour village before the stage. They start their day by entertaining the sponsor’s VIPs (in this case Brandt is sponsoring the Combativity award) at the Tour village. After the stage gets underway they drive to the finish line where they put fresh makeup on and get dolled up for the presentation. While on stage they do the obvious – hand the rider flowers and the jersey and a kiss the winner on each cheek. Laura (right) has been doing this job for 6 years and during the rest of the year she’s a physical education teacher. The other lovely lady (I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten her name) has been on the job for 2 years and is a mother and a hostess for the remaining year. Both of them got the job by auditioning with the sponsor when they advertised for the position of “Podium Girl Wanted”.

: Anti-Doping control. After every stage the stage winner and 6 random riders are chosen for urine and blood samples. Straight after the stage they are whisked away by Chaperones to a trailer backstage where produce their samples.

: Greipel takes his second stage in a row and his third career Tour de France victory.

Stage 6 Preview

Stage 6 from Éparney to Metz runs over mostly flat terrain with only one categorised climb that shouldn't give anyone any trouble. This stage is the last chance for the sprinters this week before the Tour heads for the hills on Saturday.

  My tip for the stage was Goss and oh wasn’t he close! Tonight’s is his I reckon. Cav’s all banged up and crying over his porridge with the lack of a Sky sprint train. Renshaw seems to be just a little off the pace. Sagan should be performing in ther local ballet given the moves he pulled off to just about avoid the stack, hence he won’t be in top condition for tomorrow’s sprint and Greipel will lose his powerband mojo.

    Has anybody else noticed Sagan’s skills during crash. It could be from his cyclocross days, he just wasn’t giving in and he wans’t going to come off until his front wheel snapped in half….

How would Gossy be viewed if he took out the green jersey without winning a stage?

- Undeserving, because he wasn’t good enough win a sprint outright.

In Formula 1 you can’t win the title if you haven’t won a race throughout the season. Should the same apply in the tour?

    Ah yes, I seem to have got this wrong. Someone recently told me they had changed the rules to prevent someone taking the title without winning a race. Turns out it was complete crap.

  i reckon no problem – it’s for consistency, not stage wins. Thor Hushovd won it the other year, i can’t remember if he won any stages, but he took it off Cavendish with an epic solo breakaway in the mountains where he collected a whole bag of points. it’s about guts and determination – in this race, Gossy is going for every sprint on offer, intermediates and finish lines. i say good luck to him, i’m proud to call him austrayan

CT/ Veeral – I (like everyone else) am loving the photos you bring. Excellent work and I hope you receive some repayment from the magazines for your efforts.

One question/request – is there ANY chance you could do some ‘wallpapers’ for us? Even if its every now and then, and only in a few screen different sizes. Im sure all the office jockeys would appreciate the chance to have one of your shots on our desktops during the Tour.

Im not sure how hard/easy it is to do that on the run but im sure you would get alot of support from the readers. Cheers!!

Re Greipel and the plastic cover over his helmet… I thought those were banned by the UCI this year (hence why Sky have the integrated mouldings).

  The UCI ban covers if they are not attached during manafature which most of them do by not cutting out the air vents. In the case of Lazer they glue/mold the cover on at point of manafature so its legal.

How good is Cantwell going? With a bit of luck he may snag a win. He’ll have to do it tonight though and I’m unsure if he has the engine to get through to the later stages of the race. Must be awesome for him in his first Tour mixing it up.
I didn’t like Greipel when he first came on the scene winning the TDU but he would be on the short list of favourite riders for me. What a hard nut rider.
