Footscray CC Graded Scratch Series (2012) - Footscray Cycling Club Graded Scratch Races @ VUT
Round 8 of the Footscray Cycling Club’s Winter Road Season consisted of winter crits at the VUT circuit in Hoppers Crossing in conditions that could best be describes as arctic, with a strong westerly chilling riders to the bone and causing mayhem in the bunches. A-Grade saw a reduced field, with several riders competing at Philip Island, and with windy, nasty conditions all the pre-race smart money was on Ben Johnson breaking away. Not wanting to disappoint, Flemington resident Johnson broke away and took the win by a cow-country mile, from Tim Kirkham and Jason Costin. Footscray resident Ben Ryan took out today’s B-Grade race on his backup bike, winning by using his smarts. Towards the end of a very tough race that saw all but 6 riders dropped, Phil Tehan broke away in his usual 5 laps from the end dash, but with one lap to go Ryan broke away from the chasing bunch at just the right time and caught Tehan on the straight, crossing clear of a tiring Tehan and in-form Anthony Rebesco. In C-Grade Tom Ainsworth continued his meteoric rise up the cycling ladder by taking a strong win in a race that saw all but four riders shelled into the gutter. Ainsworth, son of ex-Geelong footballer Geoff, has been impressive with his consistently strong performances, and in today’s windy conditions he weathered Chris Anderson’s attacks and took the sprint from St Kilda rider Anderson and Paul Beasley. In D-Grade, young Hoppers Crossing resident Josh Ryan took a strong win in the bunch sprint from St Kilda rider Marcus Nyeholt and veteran Eddie O’Farrell.
