By Unknown on April 17, 2012
Today the second of the Ardennes classics, La Flèche Wallonne (The Walloon Arrow), starts in the Wallonia region of Belgium. The first edition of the race was in 1936 and it was won by Belgian Philemon Demeersman. The course and length of the race has varied over the years since its inception. The longest distance the race covered was 300km in 1938. Pictured leading Swiss rider (far right), Ferdinand Kübler, is the only rider to have won both La Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège in the same year on two occasions (1951 and 1952). As well as becoming the 1951 World Road Champion.
