Onward to Forrest
By Mik Efford on November 18, 2011
Having ridden some 60 "fully loaded" kilometres from Marshall train station to Benwerrin via beautiful gravel roads (in 37 degree heat!) we make it to the campsite at the top of Big Hill completely exhausted. We wearily setup camp, cook dinner (burritos!) and relax into the late afternoon. Then 4 extremely drunken local lads stumble out of the bush. They'd been at the pub since 11am. They'd setup camp not far away and upon their return rolled a beer keg out of the bushes to have a spray shower in. I'm not kidding. Epic lads these were.
Turns out they were at the campsite for a bux party, of which more of their mates were arriving by the minute. This did not bode well, as we just wanted to sleep, so we packed up our gear, saddled up and headed onwards to Forrest. This shot was taken as we left the tarmac near the campsite and entered the wilderness again, sun low in the sky, shining through the trees. We made it another 10km towards Forrest before deciding to camp in the bush just off the road. A beautiful lightning storm drenched us that night, and hopefully drowned those wretched drunken lads sober.
