C Grade again as Declan Baker wins solo.
by John Sundie
For the second week in a row C grade filled the top five podium places and collected the lions share of the prizemoney when Declan Baker managed to hold onto a last lap gap and win solo. In the bunch spint Chris Blomfield-Brown edged out Fabio Petro for second while the seemingly ageless multisport athlete, Gino Iannazzo finished fourth in front of Chris James.
Relegated to sprint for one prize for each grade and no Series points, the A and B grade sprint was still a hectic affair with Scott Law ending up in the bush. It was GPM Racing’s Caleb Jones topping off a strong race to claim first A grade with team mate Alex Wong edging out Brad Mills for second. Nick Rathborne showed what a weeks R and R in Bali does for the form when he convincingly outsprinted the remnants of B grade for his second win in three weeks while youngster Cameron Fraser and Mike Bolt filled the other 2 spots.
Seven races down and five left in the 2012 Real Insurance Series with Luke Davison still holding a comfy 11 point buffer on the top of the table. While it’s nice to see C grade share in some of the race winnings, the ad hoc nature in which completely different riders fill the podium each week means no one C grade rider will accumulate enough points to put any pressure on the series leaders.
Now the handicapper has experimented with giving C grade their moment on the podium, lets get back to giving A grade a chance of racing for overall honours with more than a lap to go. It’s better quality racing and it’s also a chance for some of the less experienced riders to get some experience.
