Footscray CC Club VUT Crits (2012) - 21 January 2012
The Footscray Cycling Club held its annual Club Legends Race on Saturday, held in honour of respected club Legends Hugh Cram, Harry Jones and Frank Zanatta at the V.U.T. circuit in Hoppers Crossing. This race, a favourite amongst members, is seen as the race to win because of the immense respect held for each of the three Club Legends due to their lifetime commitments to the club. A-Grade regular Paul Anders was the deserving winner of the main event; the 36 year old Hoppers Crossing resident taking home the coveted sash after a hotly contested race. At about the half way mark in the race, a breakaway of 3 riders formed, and Anders knew that he was in a break that could very well stick. ‘When Ben (O’Leary), Brett (Hickford) and I got in a break I thought that we could stay away. Once Chris (Zucchet) came across it helped us because we were sort of dying a little. Generally when you are in a break and going over the hill and the bunch are halfway up the straight, you know that you won’t get caught.’ Even though the bunch never gave up the fight, the breakaway finished half a lap behind the 4; on the last lap, Anders led out from the corner, coming on to the front straight as first wheel and just holding out Zucchet and O’Leary.’ ‘I’m rapt to win this particular race; I’ve been a member of the Footscray Cycling Club since 1997 and Hughie and Harry were the two faces of the club back then. They were two top blokes and now Frank has been made a Club Legend and he’s what this club is all about.’ B-Grade’s race was dominated by the in-form Murray Crawford, who initiated several test breakaways before launching a definitive solo breakaway that the chasing bunch just could not reel in; Crawford applying enough pressure on the chasing bunch to stay comfortably up the road. Having been away on his own for the majority of the race, Crawford was able to easily deal with two late inclusions to his breakaway as Paul Sheean and Geelong’s Greg Hoskings managed to bridge the gap to join Crawford; the John West rider still dominating the sprint to come home the clear winner. C-Grade saw guest Alpine rider Peter Donahoe take the win in a hard fought race, ahead of Andrew Schiesek and David Lane, and in D-Grade Geelong rider Dean Maclennan took the win ahead of Graeme Wilson, with Colin Osborne taking the E-Grade sprint.
